Ashleigh is a personable and friendly girl who enjoys art, likes to color, play board games like Candy Land, and playing with makeup. Some of her favorites include McDonald's, Barbie and cheese pizza. She also likes animals and would like to have a family with a mom, a dad, and a dog or a cat.
Ashleigh has a metabolic disorder called Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia (NKH). NKH is an inherited metabolic disorder that causes children to have trouble eliminating protein from their bodies. As a result, Ashleigh has special dietary and medical needs, is prescribed medications on a daily basis, and is followed by a specialist. In addition to her medical needs, Ashleigh requires assistance with her academics and speech.
Ashleigh’s therapist states that she is very knowledgeable about her dietary needs. Like most children, she sometimes likes to eat things that are not healthy and needs encouragement to make wise food choices. Ashleigh continues to learn appropriate ways to express her feelings. Her speech difficulties often make it challenging to express her wants and needs. She requires redirection and encouragement to express herself in an appropriate manner with her peers as well as adults.
A family will need to be able to ensure that Ashleigh's medical, educational and behavioral needs are adequately addressed. Most of all, Ashleigh deserves a family willing and able to give her lots of love, patience, supervision and understanding.
