Cooper is 14-years-old. Here’s what he would like you to know about him. His favorite things: DVD movies and computers. I like fruits and spicy foods. Outdoor activities. What I want families to know about me: I like both team and individual sports. I like to read, play videos, and meet new people. I like school sometimes but not always. My brother and my two aunts are very important to me and so I want to remain in New England so I can see them. I am deaf and want to continue to participate in the deaf community/activities. I am a good advocate and leader. I think that the most difficult thing for parents to deal with will be my attitude. What I want from a family: I would like to be the only child in my family. Good communication with me will be important. I like small dogs and would like it if my family had a Boston Terrier. I do not want to go to church. I would like to live in a tidy, clean home. It would be nice if my family could afford to go on trips, especially to Disney World. What we want families to know about him: Cooper has attended the same residential school since the age of 4 and this community is important to him. He currently remains there during the school week and goes to respite homes on the weekends. Cooper is a bright young man with a good sense of humor. He advocates well for himself and clearly states what does and does not interest him. What we are seeking in a family for him: Cooper needs parents who participate in the deaf community; who can support his remaining in his current school; and help him maintain his relationships with his brother and aunts. Cooper’s parents will need to provide him with close supervision when he is with other children. Cooper will be successful with parents who are patient and understanding; provide him with clear, consistent parameters; participate in any recommended trainings and therapy sessions; work cooperatively with his school, therapists, and others; and provide him with the nurturance and love that allows him to thrive.
