Desiree (6/92) is a sweetheart. She loves to meet new people and greet friends. She is a "hugger". She is very responsive to nurturing and hugs. Like all kids, she wants her share of the attention and she deserves that. Desiree hopes to be adopted and will ask if a family has been found for her yet. Desiree loves school. She likes to learn and relishes the social part. She does take special handling, but her teachers are a tremendous help. This is the secret to Desiree: understanding her unique needs and providing routine and predictability throughout her day. Change can be hard for her as she likes to have a certain routine and always know what to expect. She needs to be "eased in" to change, handled with care and consideration, and then she can make a smooth transition. Desiree tries to be conscientious about her appearance and health. She has dietary restrictions and she follows them with just a little help. She takes walks to slim down and is proud of herself when she exercises. She goes to church, plays softball, travels to a variety of community events, and especially enjoys participating in the Special Olympics. She stays pretty busy! At home, she likes videos, playing with her baby dolls, getting her hair done, and helping with daily chores and cooking. In the morning, she packs her lunch for school and makes sure she is looking good! A family considering Desiree can easily be taught the approaches that help her do her best. Even though she continues to develop and learn more daily living skills, it is unlikely that she will be able to live fully independent. She is, however, eligible for a number of assisted living arrangements upon adulthood. Everyone just loves Desiree!
