When you first meet Desmond, you realize how polite he is. He is quiet and shy. He shows empathy by asking about your day or how you are feeling. In a quiet moment he will sit down next to you and give you a hug. After he gets to know you, he is more relaxed and playful and full of energy.
Desmond is in need of a family all his own. He is presently in an active foster home and learning all different types of sports. His favorites are basketball and football. He likes riding his bicycle, and when given an opportunity can be a daredevil. He enjoys music and will sing to himself or out loud. He likes jazz, hip-hop and religious music. Desmond’s favorite toys include all different types of stuffed animals, and he loves Batman and Sponge Bob characters. When he needs quiet time, he plays with his Game boy. He enjoys “Go Fish” and has great eye-hand coordination for Foozball. He has a good sense of humor with those closest to him. Desmond receives special education services which include one-on-one assistance. Sometimes he has difficulty behaving appropriately in peer groups which causes him to act up, especially in school. He is smart but nervous about new challenges. A private tutor visits him in the home and reinforces his learning which has helped with his self-esteem. Desmond appreciates familiar surroundings and people, so it can be difficult for him to make changes. His foster mother and the school help prepare him by giving him one-on-one attention. He is learning self regulation skills by being active in his foster home, gardening and helping out with chores. Because of his past trauma, it is hard for Desmond to express his feelings. He attends therapy regularly to address this issue. He will need a strong, active family to advocate for his educational and emotional needs. He also hopes his new family will support his interest in maintaining contact with his siblings. Think about meeting Desmond – it might change his life and yours.
