This is Keith, an energetic African American youngster who says he likes to do “boy things” like play basketball, video games, and collect Yugio cards. He also enjoys playing with Spiderman toys. According to Keith, he is “pretty cool to be around”. He would “like to have a family, and a pet would also be nice”. Although he wants to be part of a family, Keith can be extremely guarded toward people. He has been let down by adults and is slow to open up to new people. He has a hard time following all the rules adults expect of him. He will need emotionally supportive parents who can provide predictable routines and a very stable, safe, nurturing environment. Keith works on behavioral issues through therapy and medication management and receives special education services and counseling. He will depend on his family to support his continued participation in services to help keep him on track and guide him as he grows up. A two parent loving family in his corner can make a big difference for this young man. Because he has a strong loyalty to his birth family, Keith’s new family must be patient about the time it may take for him to bond. He has had some rough roads behind him, and his parents must be able to ride out any bumps and smooth them along the way so that Keith feels safe, loved, and accepted.
