Christopher B is a 13-year-old boy from Maine who is hoping to be adopted.
An energetic and outgoing boy, Christopher born in May 1996, is also inquisitive and friendly. He loves matchbox cars and watching "Bob the Builder," shooting hoops of basketball and working along side adults either around the house or even cooking in the kitchen. He is friendly and curious. Christopher was born with cystic fibrosis and never resided with his birth family due to his medical needs. Christopher's health has been very good despite his cystic fibrosis since he has not had any medical crisis and he has responded to medication very well. Christopher uses a special vest twice a day to clear his lungs, a procedure he has always been cooperative with and in which he has enjoyed. His digestion has been very good with the use of medication and diet. Christopher has been in several placements since he entered care in June 1996. One of these placements was a disrupted adoption when he was five years old. The adoptive placement disrupted due to the family's inability to handle the competition between Christopher and another boy in the home. Christopher is currently in a diagnostic group home where he is adjusting well. After the adoptive disruption it was decided to hold off for a while on seeking an adoptive placement for Christopher due to the need to further evaluate and get him medication he needed to stabilize his behaviors. Christopher has started on anxiety stabilizing medications and the process of adjusting his medication is ongoing. In 1999, Christopher was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and pervasive development disorder, a form of autism. Christopher attends a small rural school for children with autism and physical disabilities. He has done well in this school. Christopher has global delays in his development due to pervasive developmental disorder. However, he is otherwise considered of normal intelligence. Although Christopher has some features indicating fetal alcohol effects, this diagnosis was ruled out some time ago. His speech is not well developed but he is very talkative. Christopher does not miss a thing that happens around him. He is very inquisitive and asks questions. A single or two parent family with experience with special needs and parenting would be ideal. Christopher's adoptive parents should also be knowledgeable or willing to learn about cystic fibrosis and pervasive development disorder. Christopher's family should also be willing to work with in-home supports. Christopher does not do well with younger children due to his need for individual attention; however, he loves older children. A family with pets should be prepared to supervise Christopher's interaction with animals until he learns appropriate behavior with them.Disclaimer
