Deryck, 9 years old, dreams of becoming a policeman when he grows up. But for now, he stays busy roller skating, bowling, watching movies, playing video games and practicing Karate. During quiet time, Deryck really likes it when someone will read to him. Deryck is in the 3rd grade and is currently being assessed for special education services. Deryck is currently working on developing social relationships with other children. He typically does best when he gets one-on-one attention. He receives medication management and mental health therapy to address significant behavioral, emotional and loss issues related to his traumatic past. Medication and counseling will need to continue after placement. His caseworker is hoping to place Deryck with a family in which he will be the youngest or only child so that he can receive the one-on-one attention that he thrives on. His new family should be very structured, stable and committed to Deryck so that he can reach his full potential as a young man. He also has a brother that he would need to stay in contact with. This is a LEGAL RISK ADOPTIVE PLACEMENT. In a legal risk adoptive placement, it is expected that the family will eventually adopt the child even though the birth parents' rights have not been fully terminated at the time of the placement.
