Meet Joshua – a bright youngster with big brown eyes and an infectious smile. He has some of the same interests as most other children his age, which include playing video games and watching cartoons on television. Chicken nuggets are a favorite treat for him. Joshua is in kindergarten and performs well academically. Joshua has a great deal of emotional challenges to overcome. He has a low frustration tolerance and can have difficulty expressing emotions in an appropriate way. Joshua has a tendency to be defiant and to have angry outbursts and exhibit aggressive behaviors in the home, school and community that are slow to respond to intervention and redirection. Joshua will resume appropriate behaviors only when he is ready. Joshua will need structured environment with firm, patient care givers who provide consistent discipline and follow through when consequences are needed. Joshua’s best chance for success will be in family where he is an only child and where all the attention can be centered on him.
