Michael is a 10-year-old boy from Tennessee who is hoping to be adopted.
Shane says, “I want a family that takes me places to do stuff. I want a Dad and a Mom would be okay too. I want to have a big dog. I love to play video games and want someone that plays with me. I really like my school and my best friend, Sam. I got my orange belt in Martial Arts. I want to earn my black belt. I like little kids and can be a good big brother. I’m not sure if I want little sisters. I want to see my big sister.” Shane's Family Services Worker says that Shane needs a home that understands ADHD and is willing to provide a basic structure and choices. He needs clear boundaries and consistency. Shane would do best with someone who is willing to give him lots of attention and help him with his school work. Shane is very mechanically minded and loves remote control cars. He touches the heart of everyone he meets and has a wonderful sense of humor. He needs patient parents who enjoy laughing and set high goals for Shane while providing him with the tools to accomplish them. This kid is AMAZING! Shane has never attended school regularly until this school year. He has made tremendous strides both socially and academically (B average!!!). He is not in Special Education and requires only minor accommodations for his ADHD, provided he takes his low dosage of medication. With the strides he is making and support from a loving family, Shane could be in advanced classes by High School. He is an avid reader. Shane had never brushed his teeth until he came to us, but now, with prompts can manage his night time routine independently. Shane loves to make others happy. He has a smile on his face 90% of the time. Shane is very observant and slow to trust, but once you win him over he is very loyal. Shane does struggle with understanding how to fit into a healthy family dynamic, but expresses a desire to do so. Family therapy will be an important part of learning about each other. Shane does most of his talking when he is on the move. Shane can demonstrate a good level of independence but may chose not to do so if he needs attention. He loves being active outdoors, including biking and fishing. He has worked hard to learn about making healthy food choices and often does without prompts. Shane would enjoy a neighborhood with friends nearby, but says he might like to live on a farm. Shane is the best part of my day. He loves to be in the mix of things and share about his day. Shane needs lots of attention and sometimes demonstrates attention seeking behavior. Sometimes he brags and makes up stories, but the real Shane is the best part. Shane needs a family who can support him in maintaining contact with his adult sister. His forever family will need to set firm boundaries with her and be willing to share Shane’s love. Meeting for an occasional dinner and allowing phone calls would be appropriate. Shane will need to continue therapy to address his feelings of loss and acceptance of his new family. Shane will need time to transition and get to know an identified family before moving into a new placement. Shane will also need ongoing treatment for his asthma and medication management for his ADHD.Disclaimer
