Description
Sean is a calm, loving and personable boy who has been diagnosed with the permanent condition of encephalopathy. Presently, he is very interested in toys that make noise or play songs. Small pianos, drums and children's guitars are among his favorites. He enjoys the music coming from the instruments and can spend a lot of time entertained. He enjoys interacting with foster parents. A friendly and happy little boy, Sean enjoys being around people and commotion. At times, he may not want to play with other children, but simply watch and pay attention to what's going on around him. Even so, he is able to create healthy attachments to peers and adults. Sean has a good appetite and enjoys different kinds of foods. However, his caregiver must be careful to avoid foods to which he has developed allergic reactions. Dairy, certain fruits and foods that contain red dye are on his allergy list. Severely delayed for his age, Sean receives education for children with severe disabilities. He is only able to walk with assistance, or holding on to something like furniture. But, when placed on the floor he is able to crawl. He will need help with daily tasks such as feeding and hygiene, as his mobility and gross motor skills improve. Presently he can feed himself with small finger foods that he is able to grasp. He will need a committed family, as he is fully dependent on his caretakers to meet his physical, emotional, educational and social needs. Sean is working on his communication since he is not able to speak. His foster mother has been working with him to help him communicate, and has been teaching him American Sign Language (ASL) at home. He is making progress. Before, he would use sounds and gestures to get what he wanted, but being still in the beginning stages of ASL, occasionally he gets a little frustrated due to his lack of ability to communicate. Sean is receiving speech, occupational and physical therapy on a regular basis, and is learning life skills, which he will need as he starts school. Sean's forever parents must be devoted to him and learn all the aspects of his medical frailty and requirements. He needs a family able to provide him a lifetime of devotion and be open to the challenges of his future. A loving family who is patient, knowledgeable and experienced in caring for children with special needs would be great for Sean. They must be willing and able to plan for around the clock care and be a strong advocate for his educational and medical needs. His continued learning American Sign Language will be beneficial as he will have some way to communicate, as he grows older. He will do well in a home with or with out other children.
