Description
These brothers are part of a sibling group of five. Their two younger brothers and sister have been placed in a home together, leaving the older boys still waiting for a family. Alexavon, who goes by Lex, is 13, Shantell is 11. Give them a football or a basketball , and they are ready to go. Sports is one of their common bonds. Alexavon plays all of them, but he prefers football and basketball, and dreams of someday playing in the pros.
Shantell idolizes his older brother and said: "Lex is great at any sport. He is the true athlete. You should see him play." Shantell is a football fanatic. He plays every football video game made. His favorite NFL team is the San Diego Chargers, and he roots for running back Ladanian Tomlinson. He also plays the game, whenever a medical condition doesn't limit him. His favorite position is defensive lineman because he can put the maximum punishment on other players.
Until recently the boys lived in separate group homes. I don't want to be away from my brother. I'm afraid later in life I might run into him, and I won't know who he is. "It's very important to be together, because we want to grow up together, and someday were going to have houses that are by each other."
Both are polite. Alexavon is an eighth-grader and makes good grades. Shantell is a seventh-grader who's finding his groove in school. "I made the honor roll three times now," Shantell said.
Alexavon is the quiet one who lets Shantell do all the talking. Shantell is quick-witted, always ready with a good story, and laughs easily. He admits that he's a mischievous practical joker. Their mutual love and respect is evident when asked to describe each other, "My brother, he is an intelligent boy," Shantell said. "He's a good listener, and he's quiet. He likes basketball and football, and he takes care of my brothers and sisters really well. He treats us like a big brother. "One day he's going to grow up to be a professional basketball or football player." As for Shantell . . . "He's funny," Alexavon said. "He's good at football, and he is a talker. He talks a lot."
Both boys are beginning to think about their future. Alexavon has his sights set on playing for the Arizona Cardinals. Shantell, meanwhile, would like a career in sports, but said he will continue going to school so he can pursue his other dream - working in the health care profession. Shantell chided his older brother for not having an alternative plan for his life. "Lex, you've got to have a backup plan, because if you get injured in football you have to have your college degree. That way you can forget football and go on to something else," he said.
The boys hope to find someone who will accept them for who they are - two brothers who love each other and who are into sports. They also would like to keep in contact with the brothers and sister from whom they have been separated. They are in need of a home that will allow Alexavon to stop stressing about caring for his younger siblings, something he has had to do for most of his life. A strong father figure would be best, but Shantell said they aren't picky. "We're just looking for a home, someone who will show us respect, be mature, and keep us together," he said.
